Recently Room 12 has added a new choice to Daily 5. The kids can now read to someone. This can be a friend or even a stuffed animal friend. They have learned to sit EEKK or elbow to elbow, knee to knee. This is one of our favorite choices! We love coaching and helping our friends become even better readers. Welcome to our classroom! This will be a year filled with many new experiences for your child. Each day we will be actively engaged in learning.
Right away, we will begin our Daily 5 and CAFÉ adventure! This is the reading and writing program implemented in my classroom. Daily 5 is the structure we will use to plan our afternoons. Children will be busy completing meaningful literacy tasks. The choices will be: In the beginning we will focus on increasing our stamina to work independently during Read to Self. Within the next few months, the other choices will be introduced. While the students are completing their literacy tasks, I will be meeting with small groups and conferencing with individual students. Daily 5 is how we schedule our language block. CAFÉ is what we study during this time. CAFÉ is an acronym for the four major components of reading. They are: The children will learn reading strategies within each category. These strategies will become tools for the children to use to help themselves become better readers and writers. I will keep you informed when new strategies are introduced. Then, when you read with your child at home, you will be able to reinforce these concepts. It is going to be exciting to watch your child's reading and writing skills blossom throughout the year. If you have any questions regarding this program, please ask. I am always enthusiastic to share what I know about Daily 5 and CAFÉ! This week Read to Someone was launched in Room 9. Students learned all about EEKK, elbow to elbow, knee to knee, a reminder of how to sit during this choice. Take a look at the kids in action!
I finally have been able to create a Cafe Menu that I think will work best for our classroom! (Phew!) The Literacy For All Conference I was able to attend this past Sunday and Monday really helped to show me the best route. Soon the kids will post strategies to use during reading and writing. The idea is they will be able to pick from the board just like a "menu" from a restaurant. The kids will be writing the strategies to create a stronger connection towards their learning. At the bottom you will notice metal plates where students will move their picture magnets to help remind them of their goal. These goals will be set during either small group or one on one conferences. More pictures to follow! One of the many exciting qualities of The Daily Five is the student's ability to choose how they learn. So far, students can choose to work on comprehension strategies while reading to self, and explore the many types of text through work on writing. Last week, students were introduced to word work. Word work allows students to broaden their vocabularies or practice commonly used words through a variety of activities. Each word work bin includes activities such as: white board writing, stamping words, forming words with pipe cleaners, and rainbow writing. New activities will be introduced and rotated in. The kids are very excited about their new choice and have done a wonderful job at using the materials as tools, not toys! :)
So far, in Room 9, we have launched read to self and work on writing. I am amazed at the children's ability to read, write and follow a routine. This coming week we will be starting work on words with four different stations. A poll was taken and so far the kids like work on writing best... a rarity for so early in first grade! |
